Charity and fashion: fashionable frivolity or glamorous giving?

From charity fashion shows to charitable collaborations, the relationship between charity and fashion is a long standing one.

For me, what better way to show your support than by wearing it?

So, it was with pleasure that I recently discovered two such very fashionable and very worthwhile collaborations:

The first, a timely project for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Barbara Hulanicki’s collection of t-shirts for George at ASDA for Tickled Pink which raises money for Breast Cancer Care and Breast Campaign. The t-shirts feature sketched designs by Hulanicki and come in short and longer sleeved versions:

Each tee is £10 and £1 from each sale goes to charity. I think a trip to my local ASDA might be in order this week.

The second is also a collection of tees, this time at the Irish store, A|Wear and in aid of Oxfam’s work to help support the climate change campaign. The collection contains five t-shirts featuring illustrations by five Irish designers, Joanne Hynes, Peter O’Brien, Eilis Boyle, Una Burke and Alison Connelly, priced at £25-30:

The limited edition t-shirts are made from 100% fair trade cotton. The only question now is: which one to buy? I'm torn, Joanne Hynes' design or maybe Peter O’Brien's or then again Una Burke?

You can see the results of a street style shoot for the We Are Tee campaign featuring Irish bloggers, here and here.

As next Friday - 29 October - is Wear It Pink day in the UK and Ireland, a day to dress up and to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Research. I have decided to do my bit and am encouraging other bloggers to get involved too. We will all be "Wearing It Pink" next Friday and - as fashion bloggers do - will post photos of our pink outfits, whereby attempting to raise awareness and funds for vital breast cancer research. If you would like further information, or to make a donation, visit the Just Giving page here. To get involved, email me or leave a comment here and I will send you all of the details.
What do you think of fashionable collaborations for charity?
